Does anyone understand how staffing and the 'knacks' work?

I would love to know what the knacks actually mean. I have been going for people with related knacks for each department but when you expand a department it says you need another employee for a management position, so I have been going for someone with the leadership knack?

No idea if this is right or if I should always go for the department related knack and leadership for head office?

They add a lot to the department's efficiency rate if they are assigned to the appropriate department.

From my experience, it gives a slight boost to efficiency. When you have maxed out the efficiency of a department doesn't matter as of the current game version.

But I am curious if it helps with the company to hire extra people, since they get assigned random positions
