The up front investment to grow a company quickly is rather high, but since you control the company, your ability to pump the stock through dividend hikes, next gen product development, etc. is basically unlimited. You can become the largest company within 1-2 years and then sell your shares for huge returns and more than recoup your initial investment. Or I suppose you can just reap the profits through dividends.
My sense is that your % returns from just trading generally will exceed returns from founding a new company, however once you reach a certain level, the stock market lacks the volume for you to invest all your cash, so it makes sense to grow the market by founding new companies.
