What are the black hearts for?

i have collected 6 or so of the crystals and they automatically go to key items in inventory and im not sure what they're for.

You will eventually reach a main quest where some of them are needed, after that you can sell the excessive ones.

Instead of selling them, you can also use them as a crafting ingredient, but you'll need to find someone who is capable of making the Black Heart Gears, they offer okay stats, but has a penalty of increasing damage taken.

The main quests that need them are basically fetch quests, I wouldn't call that a puzzle. So, uh... four? I guess.
