if you are leaning towards the 1st game just get Hammerwatch Aniversary Edition which released today. It's a remake made on H2's engine with new sprites and animations as well as a new campaign.

i like the open world of the second more but i too like the idea of developping a village.
You are referring to Heroes of Hammerwatch. A roguelike that was released after Hammerwatch 1. In HoH you grind and grind and grind the same levels over and over and over. The "village" you are referring to that you "build" is strictly cosmetic and unlocks more vendors for meta progression ♥♥♥♥. The game sucks.
