They just snowball so heavily it's impossible to stop them. They grab admirals left and right because of their high prestige and since the only way to have fleets is to have admirals. They can also vassalize the entire galaxy if they want and since you can't do anything with vassals, that's more enemy fleets crashing on you. Not to mention their unit roster is really good. I am playing my first game as the Free Stars, which I guess has kind of a rough start with only 2 planets. I quickly grabbed 3 neutral planets, but the Southern Principality keeps coming after me. I play the battles smart tactically and usually lose from 0-2 units per fight, while wiping out the enemy fleet or fleets.
