I think 3 and 5 are the benchmark, they're both different though. Songs of conquest is shaping up to aim for that tier of quality as well, although it needs more development time, expansions, so on
6 and 2 are good, they do get outshined but they have their own flavor
i played 7, eh, better options. never tried 4
i would be so happy if they did such a simple thing as remake entire homm3 in homm 5 engine and boom we would have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing game
For example, monsters could move to attack you, and heroes were a unit and were killable within the battle itself. If you wanted to fk up someone's day, you could just kill off their characters.
1 and 2 are just old. Interesting to play a few times, but very basic, especially 1.
3 is classic for a reason(I'd recommend playing fan-made Horn of the Abyss), 5 builds on top of 3. Its the matter of taste which do you prefer. 3 is more fast-paced but 5 has better racial mechanics.
4 is good, but its too different from others to be accepted by a lot of old fans(who are often extremely unreasonable about it).
6 and 7 are low effort in terms of game design. I don't see a reason to ever play them again, unlike other parts.
I started HoMM with the HoMM IV and therefor was never upset by all the changes compared to HoMM III, such as Heroes and/or units able to move alone on the map. HoMM V seems to me like the best one, with still acceptable graphic designs and standard/conventional game-play while offering such a diversity of strategies based on the heroes. Not to mention the unique ability of each alignment, e.g. the rage for the Orcs, which is pure fantasy put into action. I loved HoMM V and still plays it.
HoMM VI was removing the idea of splitting your armies/heroes and was, in my opinion, only a race to the largest stack possible without the army of multiple targets and set of heroes. And not having random skills after each level meant that all best competencies would be chosen every time.
HoMM IV cannot be played anymore, if it weren't for its music, which is the best of all HoMM. Good enough for a short game :)
