New to Heroes. A little confused.

So I just picked up heroes 5 having never played a game in the series before. I started with this one because I heard it was the best. However I am slightly confused. Ive played some of the campaign but it doesn't seem to have much of a tutorial. I'm gradually figuring out the games systems on my own but it would be helpful if there was a new player guide somewhere. Also I read somewhere that the true way to play was custom games. I tried to start one up but I'm soo confused. I don't know what the differences between the maps are. Should I use multiplayer maps? Should I randomly generate maps? What do the different options in the map generator mean? I'd really appreciate any help I can get.

Heroes V is what you should play first. It starts slow and explains how the game works step by step.

Another thing I would propose is ask youtube for a Heroes V playing video. There are a bunch of good ones.

Thanks that video was helpful. I'm gonna check out some of his others. I never thought to split units for that purpose.
