(Usually, main income source is from coal mines to power plant) – at the end game or in other words at the date time over 21 century.
Trains cost higher and needs more money to maintain yet they can carry more than trucks and are way faster than trucks.
Trucks is cheaper to maintain yet they are slower than trains and cannot carry as much as trains can.
Also depends on what train or truck you have -- ish -- Also what distance is between profit point and timing table of route,
so, improving roads or rail-tracks (cutting corners) …
If you would ask me game is oriented around train network but ofc you can build buses trucks planes ships - whatever.
Anyway...
My point is…
You can check how others initialise trains over
main menu > multiplayer > search over network > load any map and as spectator : save map so then you could try re-routing maps or just see how train system works... (…)
Most resources have a primary and secondary industry. You can do fine just transporting primary resources, but you can make a lot more transporting the secondary resources, but you need to link them with the primary.
For example, if you want goods to go from a factory to a city, you will need to connect the factory to farm resources, or steel mill (which will in turn need to be connected to an Iron Ore mine).
Easiest set up for trains early in the game is Coal Mine --> Power Station.
You can also do passengers and mail, between 2 cities.
But to answer your question basically, Trains need a station where they pick up and a station to drop off.
From the main menu, select the default (Temperate Map)
Start a new map.
You will be offered a number of things you can change. Most will not need changing.
However, to make things easier you should use size 256x256 or 512x512. That size will give you lots of options.
Also select flat terrain and no rivers.
Generate the map.
Find a coal mine and a power plant.
place a single track station beside the coal mine and a single track station beside the power plant.
Join the two with a railway track.
Place a depot linked to the track close to the coal mine. (You need to select the depot which is in the correct direction so that the entrance faces on to the rail track.)
Click on the depot and buy an engine and a few coal tucks.
Now set the schedule for your train to run from the coal mine (wait for a full load) to the power station. (fully unload).
You now have a small income.
To increase your income, add more track from the power station to the coal mine so that your track forms a continuous circle and your train can continually circle between the two always in the same direction.
You can now start adding some basic signals and more trains so that when one train leaves the coal mine it is replaced by another. The more trains you have, the more signals you will need to keep them apart.
Play around with this simple layout for a while, then experiment with a few other industries or a passenger train between to reasonable sized towns.
That's the basics. The most difficult part is learning how to use the different signals to filter trains along shared tracks. But, you don't need to worry about that until later when you feel comfortable with basic single purpose tracks.
I apreciate all the tips, mainly about the logic of this game:
Now I'll put to work on my cities. =)
