Does coal have to go to a power plant that belongs to the same town? I've only just started playing but my map has lots of industry sites but only 2 compatible ones - wood and sawmill - that belong to the same town. I have oil and a refinery, but they are also in different towns.

You can transport coal from any coal mine to any power station on the map.

Generally, you will earn more by transporting things further, although the investment is also bigger to build a longer route.

If you can afford it, the longer the route the better.
Especially at the start, coal is one of the best investments, as different cargo's lose value if the Distance/Speed value is too low. Coal has a lower price per tonne, but the speed at which it is delivered is less prone to being devalued.
