What key to eat food with?

I've clicked and pressed every button that i could find and i cannot eat food. does anyone know what button i should be pressing? Even when i go through the controls there is no tutorial or knowledge of what button or mouse click it is. I am very frustrated and now thinking i wont be picking up the full game.

Select food by clicking or with 0-9 and press the space bar to eat it.

Apologies, we've tried to address this in several ways but it's been difficult to preset the user with the information in a way that it sticks correctly - it's mentioned in the opening cutscene and when your character gets hungry in a popup but it still doesn't seem like enough so we'll try some more ways. We have a tutorial in the tabbed menu - Tab, or access the inventory (I) on the bottom right and switch to the correct tab and we'll have a controls editor screen at launch.

Select with the right or left triggers and press the left button on the right pad to eat, X on a Xbox controller or Steamdeck, Square on a Playstation one
