Fruit Trees for wood
I'm feeling pretty proud of myself because I figured out that you can plant fruit trees just to harvest their wood. With 20 pieces of wood from each tree it is a very good value. Comes out to about 4 coins each, which isn't bad compared to buying wood.

Very early in the game this time (first spring) I'm buying all the tree seeds I can and planting or saving them to plant just for wood, without worrying about the fruit. It feels wasteful to not get fruit from them, but the need for lots of wood next season is obvious.

Also (gotta brag a little) I'm proud that I managed to get a house upgrade before summer. I figured it's necessary first to get a bigger box to put things in, THEN build all the extra stuff you want to put in it. I did a partial playthrough before, just to mid-summer, and found that overcrowding was my main gripe. This time I expect there won't be a problem.

You can collect about 50 wood per a day just with foraging. Just walk around the map and fast clcik twice on every tree - you get 2 wood from 1 tree per 1 day. Because there are about 25 trees on the map so 25*2=50 wood per day for free + your foraging skill is growing (it is the most difficult skill to get 100% for achievement).

So your way is not fast and not profitable, because you need time to grow fruit trees.

And it would be better if you make candies from those fruits or jam and so you will have a lot of money from selling and with your doubling crafting skill (put 1 fruit and get 2 candies/2 jams - it will be 80-90 coins from 1 fruit per a day). And villagers loves candies as a present and with jam you will never be starving... Candies gifts will make your social skill 100% very fast.

You can place your furniture with a Hammer tool and R to rotate - so when you will upgrade your house you will place again all your stuff because it is often are put in a chest after upgrading.

I know. And I do collect all the wood I can in my travels. But I like the idea of having a bank of wood I can quickly access, and replenish at my will.

Walking around the map to forage and collect wood is not always a profitable use of the limited time we are given per day. This is an alternative method for success, which you do not have to agree with.

I haven't done the math on the profitability of wood vs other crops in cash per day, but it sounds interesting to do. I'll get back to you with those numbers once I have them.

Okay, here's how I see the wood math:

One tree seed may cost about 80 coins. (Let's keep the numbers round just to be easy.)
One tree gives 20 wood when cut down.
Buying wood costs 20 coins each piece.
So growing a tree to harvest for wood saves you 20x20 - 80 coins = 320 coins each tree.
(Yes, you can forage up to 50 wood per day, but you still can do that while growing trees.)

320 coins earned in 15 days is about 21 coins per day value from growing your own wood. That's as replacement for wood you would buy.

As wood to sell, it would be worth about half that, or maybe 160 coins per tree, which is more than 10 coins per day, which still beats other crops one on one. The closest I know is pineapple, which takes 12 days to grow an 80 coin fruit, which is about 6 coins per day.

Plus, it is very nice to know there is a large bank of wood waiting for you any time you want to cut it. It helps so much when building a new house, or really anything else. Almost all projects need wood, and it is a major bottleneck in how fast you can progress.

For sure you can keep the trees for their fruit if you want. But in year one you might want to cut them down just because you placed them badly, or because the fruit season is over. You can grow more trees any time you want before next spring. Just buy more tree seeds before this season is over, and plant/water them whenever you have time, and they will be there for you in the next fruiting season.

To grow a tree you need 5 or more days. Foraging for 5 day brings you 40*5=200 wood per day for free and you will be do it while you doing other main stuff like fishing or mining or selling your goods or other.

One fruit from tree with Crafting doubling skill brings you 80 coin per day (or 160 coins per day if you have doubling Farmer skill) as a jam or as a candy.

So I prefered to have 40 free wood per day + 160 coins from one fruit every day in a season. I never bought a wood. That was never a problem for me.

Pineapple is not a tree - it is very rare and a long groving fruit - 12 day to grow - Candies from pineapple cost 80 per item when from other fruits - 40 per item. I once planted 30 Pineapples before 12 day to the end of the month and 1 day I was lack to collect a crop, all my pineapples were die.

And you need to gift all the villagers (everyone loves candy), so you will increase your social skill (in this case villagers lower their shop prices for you and give you presents very often) and you will be able to marry every single villager very quickly, because after a week all the villagers will start to love you.

And this all matter if you playing with aging because to grow your skills fast and marry amd make an heir is your most priority.

And as I know you play without aging so you don't have to hurry, and so you can allow you to spend your time on wood instead on growing skill/marry/heir.

Rapidsfinesse, it seems every time I talk to you there is trouble making you understand what I'm saying.

I'm not saying you can't grow trees for fruit. You can ALSO grow trees for wood at the same time.

I'm not saying you can't forage trees for wood. You can ALSO grow trees for wood at the same time.

I'm not saying pineapple is a tree. It is a crop which takes daily watering just like a sapling tree does. I'm comparing value per day AS IF a tree were a crop, just like pineapple, because you have to tend it daily for it to produce it's "crop" of wood.

I'm not saying not to gift villagers to raise social skill and get married. You can gift them many things besides fruit/candy.

It's true that I play without disease or aging (or at least slow aging). But I'm ALSO focused on raising social skill and getting married quickly, and before the end of first spring I have befriended the whole village, adopted a son, and gotten married. I'm about to build my first house upgrade this week. While still growing trees for wood.

Please pay attention to what I'm actually saying. I'm not stopping any other activity. I'm only adding one that I find helpful. If you don't need it that is fine. Perhaps other people might find it useful, as I have.
