Let's talk about spouses
I'm fixing to marry the blacksmith. He's nice, but tbh it's mostly for easy access to his nails.

What made you marry the spouse you chose?

Money and face - your kids will be like mix of you and your spouse.

There is no love here, there is only a partner for breed + a walking store that available for you on the morning and in the evening.

I guess my marriage is practical, yes. But it would be wrong to say there is no love. I feel like Rowland and I have developed a bond which makes us both happy.

I'll be honest I don't feel like the characters have much personality behind any of them.
Which kind of makes sense since almost everyone will die in little over a year.

Aw. I'm playing with time stopped and disease turned off, because I want to get attached to my villagers.

I'm thinking next year I will turn time back on, maybe slowly. And disease. I'll face the challenge of losing people after I've had a chance to get settled in. I like feeling engaged with my villagers' personalities.

No, they do not seem to be aging or dying. I changed all our ages to not age.

For me they seem to have lots of personality! Some are quiet but sweet. Some are loud and energetic. Even the grumpy ones have become friends and say softer things now. And when they are grumpy with me I hear it in my head as ironic, because they also smile and are happy to see me.

I love when the children gift me with bugs and leaves etc. It's so pure and innocent. They don't have much but they share whatever treasures they find.

I spent all spring gifting every person I met with a piece of wood, and talking to them twice. And I paid attention to their dialogues. Many were informative about themselves or each other. From the first week I have been getting presents nearly every morning even though I don't give gifts anymore since summer started, and in my mind every interaction still seems so sincere and full of heart.

You misunderstand, they have set dialogue. By that I mean every one has a set character archetype that they will cycle through as people are born and die.

No one in town is entirely unique, the first set of people you meet in town are always the same people with the same personalty and as they age and die the new people that show up / grow up will cycle through these presets.

So not there is not much personality behind any of them as they don't have unique dialogue that is specific to them, they can't as there is a limit to how much can be generated since who marries who, who moves in, and who dies when is all random.

This is best exemplified with the ghosts in limbo as they cycle through they have 1 ~ 5 different lines of dialogue they all repeat.

You also seem to be heavily projecting, which is 100% a-ok, but there is a difference between actual character personality and what you interpret from your own projections.

For example play a farming / life sim like harvest moon, rune factory, stardew, coral iland, Immortal Life, etc and you will see that

Well yeah, I'm projecting because that's the way to make it fun. It's just interpretation. That's what playing is all about, I think. You make up your own lore. And a game is good if it gives you decent structure to build that lore upon.

I have played Stardew a whole lot, and I do see the difference. But these characters still have personalities which develop as you play, even without a particular backstory. I guess it's not for everyone, and that's okay. Even in Stardew I did a lot of projecting to interpret characters however I wanted to see them. I made Pam a very sympathetic character and Haley pretty much worthless, and Harvey the bravest and most loving of all. It's all in how you choose to see them and what sparks your empathy or anger.

I look at a sweetie like Rowland with his cranky mother and wonder why they would be so different. As I befriend Temperance I learn a lot of her grumpiness is due to a bad back. Isabella is an absolute delight in every way, but it's sad she feels unable to move ahead with her musical talents. Bridget is very sweet but she hardly smiles. Daniel is said to be stupid but he's reliable and responsive. The mayor dances in the streets, alone or not. I just find lots of personality points to admire.

@Snowy Sprout

And that's fine, my point was though we should not mislead people in this discussion and confuse what we want to see / interpret vs what they ACTUALLY are.

In this case the town folks do not in fact have much personalty due to the nature of the game, you can impose you own interpretation for your own personal enjoyment (something I encourage) but for the sake of clarity in a discussion to separate interpretation vs realty they are rather bland.

There is also the fact that a good number of people will be in fact playing with the full difficulty settings on and so there won't be many characters we all have in common that we can talk about.

My black smith has died and now there is a completely different older person running that shop compared to the one you chose to marry.
And because they cycled through the preset his dialogue and demeanour is the exact same as the 3 other older shop keepers in town.

BUT.

That all set aside I married the fisher girl because I thought she was cute and her drunken antics made me chuckle.

Now that you mention it, if the age setting does in fact stop the towns folk from growing older and dying and you turn off diseases.

Then for all intents and purposes they're first set of personalities BECOME their ACTUAL personalities.

Now that I think about it that might be a more fun way of playing.

Yeah, that's what I"m saying!

I'm not a wuss for turning off disease and age. I'm just immersing myself in a fun and safe "early period" of the game before I graduate on to hardmode later.

Losing villagers you barely know is painless. Losing friends you've developed a relationship with is a whole different challenge. IDK if I'll be able to handle it, honestly. Maybe I'll just turn age and disease on during the winter and part of spring. That makes sense as the worst/hardest time for people to survive.

I mean the reason why most sim games like these don't have death come up that often (Harvest moon a wonderful life had a few older characters pass on after a few years) was to be able to actually give their characters depth.

This is not a hard game, the *challenge* settings do not make this a hard game or even a challenging game.
And who plays a harvest moon like game for a challenge?
No, I'm firmly in the camp of play what lets you have the most fun.

Personally I keep the tool breaking off because IRL I have purchased exactly 2 axes in my 30+ years of life and I have a very hard time believing that the typical person goes through 1 to 2 axes a week.

I married Kat so I could buy good food off her and ended up starving anyway because she is never at home
