Crafting out of the storage boxes would be great but it's a mechanic that I've only seen in a small number of games, I wish it was a standard feature in all games.
This game is very limited with the amount of resources you can get each day, only 2 ice cubes is the worst one, and the mining isn't much better, you should be able to get much more from mining, wood chopping, and resource gathering in a days run.
And then there is the shops that may or may not have what you need on any given day, it took a year of checking every day before I was able to find a steel ax. Then there is the paint that you can only buy on weekends from the ships. Imo the shops should carry everything you might need or want all of the time.
This game is fun for awhile, but then the grinding to gather what you need gets really old, it kind of sucks the fun out of playing.
