Bonus Max ?

On the map, when we select an area and a difficulty, there is a "Bonus max" 1, 2, 3, 4 ...

What does this mean ? Is it the max equipment tier ?

Yes. It means that an item has a maximum of that many bonuses.

The last area of each world always has bonus max one level higher than the areas around it, that and all of those areas introduce a new stat on items (they are usually really good).

Stuff like that is the reason players spend the vast majority of their playtime on the freeloader class. Freeloader has the highest hard cap on the stats that make equip drop AND on the rolls to determine their rarity.
