The chance is very small, I recommend setting traps shortly before you go to sleep (About a 10% Chance per hour)
If its indoor, it needs to be in another room, with closed doors. So you either spend the time outside or have it closed off.
without bait, it's like around 5% chance to catch something per turn.
just leave it a few spaces away before you sleep, or leave it on another map space you know you'll revisit eventually. once it catches something, you have 4 days before it goes rotten, so no need to pick it up asap.
Once you get a couple fishes and turn them into fillets, you can then snowball into having more baits and more fishes (as long as you can keep the fishing pole's durability up).
You can then dry most of the fish fillets for long-lasting food.
Also fishing requires water, which is very rare. In fact until this update had never seen a park or the sea/ harbor before
The park was there before, altho very rare. Seaside and Heli are new I believe tho.
