Early access is still release. It is your big moment. There is no second burst of sales at v1.0 unless the developer or publisher pays for marketing.
idk why everyone is treating this game like it's some sort of live service game where if the playercount is low they need to abandon the multiplayer and pivot to single player only
at this point the multiplayer (aside from some bugs and stability issues) is basically done from a mechanical standpoint, what motivation do they even have to remove it? especially considering the game can be played entirely single player and multiplayer is in no way mandatory and gates no content
like seriously the ONLY TIME player count actually affects your experience of a game is when it is a game with mandatory multiplayer (especially in PvP games) - unless you really, really wanted to play this game exclusively by joining random lobbies in multiplayer the player count has literally no bearing on your experience
I will have to agree that it doesn't feel that this is a forced multi-player game (there are no rewards or bonuses, at least none that I'm aware of). Not sure how item sharing works, but imagine that having to share with others might serve as incentive limitation/balance for larger groups, as I'm not sure there is any difficulty scaling (depending on amount of players).
If you enjoy playing single-player, as I do, just play single-player.
However, after some time played, one might come to the conclusion that the game was designed for mutli-player... as the bosses and health economy in the game is currently quite brutal and unforgiving, even unfair at times (due to glitching, getting stun-locked, randomly appearing enemies that see and engage from a mile away, etc.) Maybe you need a team of 4 to not constantly die and restart a new world several times in one session.
That been said - hopefully the devs are placing more focus on the content, mechanics and bug fixes, rather than the multi-player experience. This game is indeed still in EARLY ACCESS.
