IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946

Game won't run
I'm using Windows 10, latest version and I can't get the game to run. When I click the play button, the game just immediately crashes. Some I read suggested setting the .exe file to run as administrator and select Windows XP SP 2 compatibility mode which I tried but it didn't help. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

Try this over anything else. This runs on both my Windows 7 and my Windows 10 rig. The DEP fix isn't necessary on Windows 7 but it requires a DEP inclusion rule on Windows 10. Here's what I mean.

DEP

How do I access Data Execution Prevention in Windows 10?
Control Panel
Click System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings. On the Advanced tab, next to the Performance heading, click Settings. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab. Select Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only. But make sure you navigate to your Executable file that starts the program and in this case you add this executable to your inclusion listing. In my case it's D:\Steam\steamapps\common\IL 2 Sturmovik 1946\iL2fb (il2fb is 156kb). Delete "Steam's shortcut" to desktop and create your own from the il2fb file. Keep this DEP procedure handy as in saving it in notepad because I've run into the same problem so many times. Weird but it often does work.

My guess is you don't have legacy DirectX drivers installed; but with that said IL-2 1946 runs best for me using the OpenGlide rendering mode. Try changing to OpenGlide--you can do that using the il2config tool located in the game's main folder.

Thanks for the reply shadowgravy, I didn't know about the configuration tool, that's very helpful.

Where do I find legacy DirectX drivers? I always thought the normal DirectX updates cover all DirectX games. I see in game requirements it says DX9 is needed which I am pretty sure I have installed. FSX runs just fine in DX9 mode though I prefer DX10 mode usually.

I was just looking and I don't see any configuration tool in the main folder or other sub folders. What is the exact name of the file to run the tool?

The app hould be named "il2" or "il2conf" -- something like that -- in the main folder for the game. Maybe it wasn't included with the Steam version; I have the DVD version.

I'll post a block of text tonight that you can use to edit your configuration file. Maybe that will help.

As for the DirectX drivers, you should be able to find a legacy drivers package with a browser search. Or, look for DirectX 9.c as a download executable. Microsoft ended support for DX9 a couple of years ago and it is no longer included with Windows 10. But as I said before, the other rendering mode Open Glide works better for me -- the DX mode causes GUI freezes and not able to geneate a new dynamic career.

Yeah the only files I see that begin with "il2..." are just the main executable and some .dll files. Sometimes I'm just blind and I can't find certain files but I looked through the list of files over and over and I still don't see it.

I really appreciate you offering to post the changes to the configuration file, that file I do see. I look forward to getting the game running. This game is literally the only combat flight simulator I never played before and even though it's old I am still very interested to try it.

Okay, the application is actually named "Il2set." If you don't have it I guess it isn't available to Steam owners. Bummer.

Find the document named "conf." Open it and scroll down a few lines to the [GL Provider]. You want to change that block to:
[GLPROVIDER]
GL=Opengl32.dll

If that doesn't work, it may help to also edit the [Window] block. Here is what mine looks like:
[window]
width=1920
height=1080
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0
WideScreenFoV=1
UIColor=0
UIDetail=0
UIBackground=en
Use3RendersUI=0
FastDetectBit=32
FastDetectMode=2

Ok I went to change the parameters you suggested but everything is already set to the same as yours with the exception of the last three under [window] which are missing in my version of the configuration file. Seems it's already set to use Open GL which may be why they got rid of the configuration tool. I did change the resolution to my native resolution but everything else is the same. I did try adding those last three lines just to see if it would help but still no luck.

I still can't get it running. I think it's best to contact the developers for help, that is what I plan to do.

If you want to contact them you can email them at

support@1cgs.net

Actually I was wrong, this is the correct official support email address:
doversupport@il2sturmovik.com

I just sent them an email asking for help.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

I'm so sorry I took so long to respond, for some reason I never saw your post or I missed it somehow. I found it recently while searching through my old posts and saw this.

So I tried this suggestion and it actually worked!! It didn't work at first just by adding iL2fb.exe to DEP so I added all executables in the main folder for the game and the game works now. You have no idea how happy this makes me :steamhappy:

Thank you so much for your advice, I very much appreciate it. Even though it took me so long to see it, I'm so glad I finally discovered your post.

Award given :steamhappy:
