IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946

IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946

Steam, please update IL-2 1946 to offical release v4.13.4
While I only play with a fully modded IL-2 1946 that requires v4.12.2, I feel that Steam should update IL-2 1946 to the latest offical patch, currently v4.13.4. There are a number of reasons for this.

The gamers who mod IL-2 1946 already know how to downgrade back to v4.12.2 to be mod compatible, where as the average gamer who buys this on Steam will be unaware of the additional offical patches, fully expecting the Steam version to be the current version, as is pretty much the case with every other game available on Steam.

The developer, Team Daidalos, spent a lot of extra time providing support for their game long after release, something they didn't have to do. It seems like a huge disservice to them for Steam to NOT provide the latest offical updates.

Currently Steam users have to go to a third party website and download the 4 remaining offical patches individually (along with the 4.13.1 supplemental campaigns, missions and skins) in order to get up to the current version 4.13.4. Why should someone who bought the game on Steam have to go through the trouble of patching it themselves? This of course doesn't make any sense.

I kind of agree, but i wish they'd do a GOG think where they let there be like, a beta branch. That way you could choose to get the most popular version (4.12.2m) or the latest (4.13.4m) before DLing.

This would be a dream come true for someone like me who has like 4 installs becasue they want to switch between the more heavily moddable early version and the newer version.

If this happens then everyone who is using mods at the moment is going to have broken games. So the options are to just leave it as it is and those who don't install mods would not bat an eye that a newer patch exists or screw over a bunch of people that have mods installed that will break their game. The two major mods right now (BAT and VP) are stupid simple to install and offer so much to the game. There is really no reason to play the vanilla version of this game unless it's for MP which is pretty dead.

Yeah exactly. Like I said, if they made the beta option 4.13.4 that'd be awesome

This is completely false. People who use mods for this game know better than to use the default IL2 1946 Steam folder. If you're not using a separate folder for your modded IL-2 1946 game then you're doing it wrong. Regardless, it's not that hard to roll back the 4.13.4 game to 4.12.2, the instructions are at the same website that hosts the mods.

I would bet the majority of people buying and playing IL-2 1946 through Steam aren't using mods and just want the most current version of the game to play (as we all do when buying a game through Steam). Steam could easily add the option to download the 4.12.2 version in the beta tab.

Until then I recommend people just buy the game through GOG, at least they have the proper 'up to date version' as well as the older version too.

It's not hard to roll back? It screws up your game if modded. Let's not beat around the bush here, many don't use a separate folder for a modded version of the game as it's a waste of space. If you have a modded game you can play the vanilla game using the IL-2 selector from SAS. Literally no reason for a vanilla game folder.

Those who buy this game these days buy it for mods, otherwise they play the new IL-2 or War Thunder. As stupid as it may sound it's not worth updating the game to the latest version on Steam, it would cause more harm than good. Like I said, nobody bats an eye that there is an updated version but if it was patched into the main branch of the game people will be upset because of broken modded games.

I have no problem with the updated version of the game being in the beta branch.

>Those who buy this game these days buy it for mods, otherwise they play the new IL-2 or War Thunder.

I agree with Maki to a degree here. I think 4.12.2m will remain the most popular version simply becasue of the modding scene. It's much harder to mod 4.13.4 at the moment, and not many people besides the Russians actually do it anyway.

I think people buying it on steam who are older players that havent played in years, or people that are just getting into it from videos on YT (which are mostly of modded installs), then it would be frustraiting for them to HAVE to roll back before they even start modding, when they could have just had the right version for a popular mod like VP or HSFX or BAT in the first place.

I'd rather have to patch UP than roll back.

I guess in a perfect world BAT and VP modpacks would get updated to work with 4.13.4. What are the chances of that happening? :/

Some of these listed in the patch notes are included in BAT because they're compatible.

Yes, the Russian community is more geared towards modding the latest version, and Global Mod for Front Skies is a great VP-inspired mod for 4.13.4

I disagree. The vanilla install of Il-2 1946 v4.12.2 only takes 6 GB. That directory is then moved out of Steam and placed somewhere else which is then used as your modded Il-2. It doesn't take up any extra space because you don't need the original IL-2 installed within Steam to run the game. This is why Steam only shows that I have 8 hrs of play time, simply because I'm playing the game outside of Steam. And gamers using an IL-2 modpack are generally not worried about disk space; the VP Modpack takes up around 45 GB and a full BAT install takes over 85 GB with all patches installed. And that doesn't include the additional 15-70 GB of installation files that most keep somwhere separately in case a modpack needs to be reinstalled :)

Anyway, as mentioned before, Steam could offer the latest version v4.13.4 just like GOG, and just as easily offer v4.12.2 under the beta tab with a sticky telling mod users how to access it.

As I said there is no need for a vanilla game folder as the IL-2 selector allows you to play the vanilla game. What is the point in having a vanilla game folder if I can use the selector in my modded install of the game and choose to run the vanilla game?

The point is, keeping your IL-2 directory outside of Steam ensures that if there ever is an update, it won't impact your mods. This is also the method the admins at the mod sites recommend.

It seems you're unfamiliar with the 'v4.13.x unpatcher' so here's the link if you ever need it.

It super easy to use and literally takes 1 second for it to work, bringing your game back to v.4.12.2 in no time at all. :steamhappy:

If this will fix a broken modded game if the most recent patch is applied on Steam then I am all for it.
