Maybe sometime end of next year the game gets a modding pass. I really think that the devs should reach out to those modding teams when they are ready and enlist them to help with what the modders would want to be able to freely edit. Making the game mod ready does take input from modders after all.
But what would really allow the mod scene to take off are tools to edit the game. Things like a ship editor so you can plug your compatible fancy new mesh and textures into it then assign the different ports for weapons and such and allow for easy editing of the ship stats themselves. Atm its a nightmare of multi level xml files just to edit a few basic stats and its not all that easy to figure out what does what. While I understand this allows for infinitely greater flexibility its orders of magnitude more complicated than the simple one file edits of ships and races etc in DWU.
