Distant Worlds 2

Distant Worlds 2

How does it compare with Stellaris?
I know its just out and nobody has really got stuck in yet, but for those who have played Stellaris, what do you think?

I've played Stellaris a lot already but I'm very bored of it now, so I'm looking at this game which looks quite similar, and I'm wondering if its a fresher take on it.

stellaris is like dating a girl with two arms and two legs.......and small cans....

this is like dating a girl...with no legs, no arms, and massive cans

Wouldnt it help when you make smaller Galaxis, for the performance Issues?
And what PC Systems the Guys have that saw those performance Issues?

No comparison.

Stellaris is a lot more polished. And, in case of my system, actually works without crashing.
Stellaris is the much prettier looking game, which is a big consideration for some people.

I prefer Distant Worlds, personally. But I can't play it yet, and so I'll have to play Stellaris for the time being. They support my system :)

Stellaris now after several years of post release development, or Stellaris on release? Because late game in Stellaris at release was completely broken and unfinished, it ran like mollases, and the AI was shockingly bad, it didn't even work until after several patches lol. They've never really improved the AI either, they just nerfed the game mechanics, completely changing the game from the release version to hide how garbo it is. It's all a facade a curated to heck theme park lol, I played it until they ruined it. The only things that compare really are the performance issues. DW is much more complicated, and it has real logistics like fuel supplies and raw materials that need to be transported around your empire by real civilian ships. Makes war more interesting than just blob versus blob like in Stellaris. :D

The only 2 things that put me off DW:U was the resolution limitations and the laggy looking scrolling. Aside from that it looks pretty good. Since playing games like Starsector with 2D but very detailed sprites, I've come to appreciate those kind of game over 3D.

So I don't really get why they did this in this game. Could have just made the zooming smoother, fixed UI scaling, and no need for any more graphics. By comparison, while this game is 3D, its an ugly 3D. Just don't get it at all.

Stellaris is exactly the same, a 2D plane with 3D models. It's called 2.5D. Only 4X I played that had full 3D is Star Ruler 2. :D

I think 2.5D is when you have 2D images are different view distances. I think what you're talking about is either 3D platform or 3D isometric.

If you enjoy 4x space strategy games I'd class this one as a must have. Personally I am enjoying this much more than Stellaris, as I've played that game to death. The hyperdrive mechanics, private economy, and resource based economy do so much more to really make your empire feel alive, and makes the scale much more grand than Stellaris.

After playing DW:2 for a solid week I am enjoying it much more than Stellaris. Stellaris feels much more on rails (fixed hyperspace lanes really giving me this feel) it feels very rigid. DW:2 is much more fluid, you feel as though you are "going with the flow" of your empire instead of micromanaging every single pop job on a planet for maximum values.

On that note, I also really like how population is handled. Instead of the mess of assigning jobs in every colony populations only effect the tax income of your worlds, so it's much more like the Anno game series in that regard if you are familiar. You expand to exploit resources that will grow your populations and net your private and state economy cash money. That alone makes this much more enjoyable to me. Though you might differ on that, hope this helps.

2000+ hours Stellaris playing time, now I find this game far more matching what I expect for a space 4x game.

I played Stellaris quite a bit around launch and it was amusing but obviously just a way to push DLC. It's not a great 4X game. I mean, neither is DW2 but at least they're trying. Stellaris is all about how to shoehorn the next DLC into the game. With DW2 they need to actually make the game fun before they're going to fool many people like that (speaking as someone who has bought both "DLC" at full price).

DW2 (and the original) is a rich and complex simulation. It's a 20 course meal that you can't possibly eat and digest at one sitting.

I agree only if you add that you are an English tourist, this meal is ordered by you in some Chinese restaurant, the menu is in Mandarin and you don't know what you already ordered as long as the waiter didn't bring you that to the table.

What I mean is that the game is unintuitive. There is a nice post about cash flow at red. The whole concept of "budget" is wrong from an economic point of view. If the DEV wants to show the dual fundaments of budget in this game they should make it different. Because now the new player sees that he should bleed money....but the bank account rise like crazy.

My short opinion:
Stelaris
+++ multiplayer
++ medium hard entry level
+ better menu (more intuitive)

--- End game (without mod is boring)
-- there is some "Mega" weapon design and at the end everybody use it. So the battle are boring.
-- highway in space (map with "connectors" between the systems. So you have some "chokepoints" easy to defend).

DW2 (after 10 h)
++ ship designs approach and possibilities
+++ private sector
+ battle tactics (different ship types of different civilizations).

---- No multiplayer
--- very hard entry level (no proper tutorial, without YT guide video you are like kids in the fog).
-- there is chaos after 5-6 systems (plant of ships, plant of mine stations, pirate attack, space "animal" attack. In some moments you just leave it on auto.
- diplomacy. at the beginning, you can only give some gifts worth more then your 1 year income.
- a strange way of displaying net income at the top menu.

Multiplayer in this kind of games is more for hyping the game by streamers.

I WAS a massive fan of Stellaris until I picked up DW2. Stellaris is in many ways to DW2 what Master of Orion is to Stellaris. The sheer scale of a solar system in this game is immense. This feel more like a Galactic empire simulator while Stellaris feels more like a role playing game. Watching ships stroll across a solar system in seconds in Stellairs is pitiful compared to this game where you need hyperspace technology just to traverse your own system. The graphics especially of the planets are MUCH nicer in DW2 than Stellaris which looks cartoony in comparison. There are many aspects to Stellaris I enjoy such as the lore of the different races, random story events and how you can genetically modify your species etc but really underneath it's all the same playstyle and just doesn't compare to this game. Ship battles are more immersive in DW2 as Is diplomacy and war overall

I love Colonizing worlds and in Stellaris it felt pointless. There is no sense of achievement from colonizing as so many planets are available at 100% suitability. In this game it's much more rare to get high suitable planets. You certainly aren't getting 100% suitability. It feels much more realistic and takes much more time and effort but it comes with a sense of accomplishment you don't get with Stellaris

I really do hope this development team expands as what the developer has created now Is amazing and i'd love for it to be expanded. I would love to see this level of scale with so much lore added to story telling with random events like stellaris and more involvement with settlement management. I hope this is only the beginning for this franchise.

Another thing I forgot to mention is exploration. This is something Stellaris prides itself most with. The feeling of leaving Earth for the first time and finding other forms of life and potential colonies. The issue is that with Stellaris you IMMEDIATELY are able to send your ships off to scan other solar systems which can be scanned in minutes so in reality you end up finding other forms of live in less than 30 minutes in Stellaris. With DW2 you'll still be in your own solar system. It's much slower and more grand so that when you do finally come across other forms of life it feels much more exciting especially if they are other empires which can end up going to war with you and may be more advanced
