Gripes about system names (and duplicates)

So this is one of those barely 0.25 or 0.5 stars out of 10 complaints. e.g. not a big deal, but such obvious nuisance it's hard to ignore or not see literally every single game.

#1 minor complaint - since DW2 clearly does not use a random name generator, and name list is hard coded so same names every galaxy generation, why not prune that name list just one time? Would never have to do it again.

1a) With static name list to pull from, it's bizarre there are not enough names to meet the number of their own large map (e.g. not a mod created super large or whatever). If default game can have 2000 star maps, then name list should have at least that many names without duplicates.

#2 - While pruning that list, might as well remove the incomprehensible system names. e.g. not talking purely from American english pov, but seems odd from many languages speakers pov to see system names like Aoxosowu, etc.

I would expect this if using a random name generator, but since they're not, might as well clean up that static list.

2,3k meaningful system names that attach to the 400 standard ones, those are the same as in DW:U. Still, to not have any duplicates the algorithm would have to be changed, so on its walk through this list it would touch every element only once. Which is probably beyond the scope of simple modding.

^^ Am definitely going heavy mods, but not for awhile. Just like with DW:U I'll prob do at least 1-2k hours w/ vanilla game. Then do all the UI, font, icon replacements, etc.

It's a plain text file, sample looks like this:

Word count shows 657 system names currently. So 2000 star map will have ~33% duplicate names. (assuming names pulled sequentially and not randomly, in which case I suppose % dupes could be much higher based on pure RNG.

Looks like simplest self-hack mod to just edit/replace this file with another name-generated list. So will guinea pig myself and try it w/ next new game.

Downloaded a 79k line city name list from github. Either all my systems are going to start with letter A, or will have to find some random scrambler tool to scramble the name list. (unless DW pulls randomly)

It's even worse than this, because 2K stars don't mean 2k stellar objects, but only 2K systems... and those names in the SystemNames.txt are used for everything with individual names inside each of the systems, too - moons, etc.
(you can easily check for this if you reduce the names in the above file, so that almost everything uses the same names (exceptions are only system- and planet-names, etc. that are used for specific events. )

...and yes: DW2 always chooses them randomly in those lists (it's the same with names, titles, etc.)

Well my monster 79k city names list should do the trick. Initially was going to use actual star names from an astronomical star catalog, but turns out there are barely any 'common name' stars.

Like it's only in the few hundreds (400-500?). Everything else is the alphanumeric string they.

It would, but still only bucket of water at fire sort of analogy. From the IAU (International Astronomical Union that sort of controls/decides on official naming), there's a few hundred. Add another few hundred for constellations, and generously say 200-300 exoplanets ones incuding the not-yet approved ones.

That maybe at best gets me 1k list. DW2 needs 2010 just for the star systems + some generous bump higher for planets that earn a unique name.

e.g. no idea what the internal game logic is, unless pure random chance. But most planets get the name SystemName+number, so like Aqoenia-1, Aqoenia-2, etc. While others sometimes in that named system gets the odd unique name.

Complete wild ass guess but as SWAG, at least 15-25% of all planets in systems get a unique name. So I'd need a systems.txt list of bare minimum ~2500 names to allow for 2000-star 10x10 map.

My 97k city names list should be overkill. About to test that right now in new game start, soon as the new update drops.

Well, took awhile of manual finding, converting raw text/tables into CSV list, but took original game names + IAU common star names + countries + USA states/capitals + World capitals + ancient greek city states -->

That finally added up to 2161 reasonably 'star systems' kinda sounding names (which ought to be just enough for ~2010 max w/ 2k stars map. Would post small file ~18k but not much an uploader.

I was using a mod name list and my Capital System was Niger. It was very annoying. Uhg, there's only one G but even steam is like, "I ain't taking that chance"

1- too lazy

2- hardly seems worth it for one small text file change

3- most ppl dload mods b/c too much effort or not skilled at making themselves. Copy/paste into notepad anyone can do

4- last and prob more relevant - I thought if ppl knew how to notepad edit the systemnames.txt themselves, they could then manually edit one or more names to suit them. e.g. I added my own personal home city, but it's not in the csv list b/c not a world capital.
