I made duplicate fleets, with the only difference between them being the fleet role, with all relevant automation enabled. I spent some time seeing what each one did, fully automated and under manual orders. I tested similar fleets in particular situations (as close as reasonable given race differences on ships), using saves from the various games I've played, including the presence of monsters, hive, and pirates, a massive war against an enormous empire, no threats at all, and at war with multiple empires. I tested fleets with different abilities, including assault pods, transport ships, ion weapons, fighter hangars, fuel barges, and the use of long or short-range weapons. The only guesswork at that point was in judging if that was sufficient to have a qualified enough understanding to create a guide.
And that guide covers this question. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2834433225
It does not go into exhaustive detail, but if you have questions after reading that, please ask any specific questions. I have some ideas of what those might be, but I find it unnecessary to detail those to such a generic question.
I created this in the first place since Scott's guide glosses over the topic. I focus on fleets.

Thank you very much! =))))))))))))))))))
Yes I was perhaps being rather flippant when dismissing all the user explanations on the roles. You have certainly allayed my concerns that people were just putting forward their best guesses.
