What 'exactly' does a research agreement do?
If I'm ahead, do they get all my research? yea, sharing tech - but in what manner. When is it good to do treaty - and when not so good?

Did anyone ever resolve this?

Both races share some of their research points - according to help screen. However I have to own up to never getting good enough diplomacy to have an agreement myself

I did in one game - however, no where could I get info on actual effect(s) of treaty. Research points didn't distinguish between mine and theirs.

When you select an empire in diplo window, scroll down, and see info on trade. Great. Why not also show 'trade of Research points?

I tried exploring this with a save I have with 2 research agreements.
Both with and having cancelled both agreements the research project advanced 14% in 1 year.
There's a lot of room for bias but simply: Research Agreements effect is probably 0 or insignificant (less than 5% research output).

Cool. Were you way ahead, or behind the others?

Err... hard to say. Playing on harsh-extreme so economy is very much in the red all the time, they have much more money/pop than me but I probably have twice the 'unfunded' research labs. Arguably same tech level and research output, and I was researching a technology they already owned (high-tech specialization').

I'm way ahead and the AI wants to set up research agreements with me. I noticed that initially when I was in an agreement with the AI, they started expanding rapidly. This might just be a coincidence but I didn't want a friendly rival so I canceled the research agreement and they haven't colonized another world since...also could be a coincidence.

Either way it didn't look like there was any benefit to me.

My experience (I was ahead, maybe 1/2 a level) was the AI seemed to get way more than me.

Almost none of the diplomatic treaties work atm. Like, I don't even think they have any functional code beyond the bare minimum to get them to appear and a few opinion modifiers.

I haven't checked, but it was my impression from reading the galactopedia that a universally more technologically advanced empire gets nothing, and the lesser gets advantage when researching something the other empire has...

I find the treaties stack opinion modifiers. If you get limited trade agreement you're basically guaranteed to eventually ally.
What I don't like, is if I just want to trade with an empire and not ally that it isnt possible because eventually they'll hate you for not accepting the better treaties.

Also, defense pacts are useless and dont' work.

They don't work, except in keeping the 'ally' liking you and not going postal on you.
