Besides, where you have a mining station, no one else can build one. So you can prevent anyone else from getting hold of these resources.
Especially at the beginning of the game, the speed and range of the mining ships is rather low. The range of construction ships is greater and so you can also get to places where the mining ships cannot even go.
I occupy all planets with important raw materials, especially in border areas, with mining stations. The mining ships can get around the asteroids, where a station is often not even worthwhile.
I also use mining stations partly as fortifications. At least as long as I can't build proper defensive forts. Even if they can't withstand a fleet, they can at least buy me a little time to react to an attack.
I'd say that a planet with deposits and a sizeable population is the only thing better than a mining station.
But ultimately you want mining bases most of the time: private economy pays for them, and once you build more of them private economy also pays your starbases to build more freighters, boosting your cash. They also extract resources much faster and can store more, meanings it overall much more efficient.
Really mining ships are only useful for filling gaps when mining stations can’t be placed.
I do not think it is worth it to build a mining station near a single asteroid with a 3% abundance of steel, tho
