Where as when playing with friends you can't always be sure what they will do, Also we try out different mods all the time which spices things up as they can drastically change which paths of optimal and lead to needing to explore new setups.
I've tried talking up DW to my friends but ultimately most only wanna play MP so they have no interest in the game. But I think it would be great to play a game with them. It would be great to play as Pirate faction while others are main empires. It would be a bit like playing CK2 where one person is a simple Lord and another in King. So the players aren't at same level working for same goal but could still help each other out or move against them.
You can't just say "multiplayer is not even so hard to make" without knowing in detail how the game in question works under the hood
