Well i'm currently playing on a WMR headset that have the same problem as you described, but i can play if i connect a xbox 360 controller, i know it's not the same thing of course when comparing with the motion controllers, but if you have the xbox controller maybe you should give it a go?
Snarky. So I will answer it.
The game carries the icon for Vive compatibility, and it's clearly not fully compatible. This is not the norm.
That it's only playable with gamepad on Vive and not controllers should be clearer, not doing so will just generate bad will imo.
