Lead your targets, although the display tells you if you are doing this right. It's best to shoot from the enemy's six o'clock.
If we were able to declare TAILING then our aircraft can commit itself to having an advantage and cannot switch target and the predicted path is revealed so we can follow through with our gunnery.
There SHOULD be perks or abilities governing that as well, otherwise we might as well be having tea and texting on our phone during combat ... :(
For getting more shots to hit I have several tips (others noted some of these above)
1) Closer is good (Maybe you are too far)
2) Get the yellow bars beside the upcoming turn's flight path to be as long as possible. This might require experimenting a bit with your plane's path
3) Yellow bars close to the start of your turn are more likely to hit
4) Pointing your plane at a Stalling plane (Red or white <<< markers beside the target) helps because the target's path can't deviate much as it is going slow
5) Pointing your plane at a blacked-out enemy (black lines beside the flight path) helps because the target won't deviate much in the flight path...the pilot isn't trying to maneuver
