I can’t figure out how to play

So I started my journey picking Pabumon and Gummymon. I eventually get them to their rookie stage but Motimon turns into Hagurumon instead of Tentomon and Gummymon turns into ClearAgumon instead of Terriermon. And then when they reach champion stage they both turn into Numemon. How do I get them to evolve into the digimon I want instead of random digimon? And can I add more digimon to my team further into the game?

If you get Numemon it's usually a clear sign that you suck as a trainer and that you should get better.

stats my man. Check History for next possible digivolution
if any of them misses it either be Numemon or Sukamon iirc

Check your digimon stats, ensure that it matches the requirement of the digimon you want (some digimon stats may be unobtainable during your early generations). If most of the stats doesn't meet the requirement, then it will turn to numemon or its peer.

Not to fret though, later in the game, you will meet the requirement easier and have more control over the digivolution.

Hello and welcome to the Digimon World my dude!

And yes it is based on their stats and how you train them as well as in, their mood and etc. But you dont need to worry though, just play the game and do a few hours in the gym daily and progress. There are also hidden stat Requirements that you cant keep track of like Battle Count and etc.

The worst part about this game is that it encourages you to grind via battle while the original title endorses you to grind at the gym like a real gigachad. The best way to gain stat is by fighting Wild Digimon that has higher stats than your Digimon. However, it is recommended to start doing that until you reach 2nd Generation.

I'd use some mods on NexusMods for Quality of Life mods that saves time, I reckon you to check them out if you feel some stuff are a bit tedious and makes the game more fun for you.

There are mods that shows the hidden stat requirements as well as mods that enables you to gain all gathering resources with one click instead of multiple times.

Use this website [www.grindosaur.com] to know what stats you need for every digievolution.

For example if you want to digivolve your Motimon into Tentomon it needs to have HP≥ 1500 and STA≥ 210, and for Terriermon your Gummymon needs to have STA≥ 150 and SPD≥ 210.
They usually have multiple requirements and some digievolutions have the same requirements but also have another extra, so you have to be very precise if you want a specific evolution.

Digimon have different digivolutionpaths, not just 1. It all depends on stats/weight/happiness/discipline/etc. If however your digimon is changing into Numemon it means you are not letting them poop on the toilet and/or you don't make them rest after a few trainingsessions.
