What does Attribute do?

Not to be confused with Nature (bonus damage).

Digimons with fire nature do bonus damage to nature/filth and takes increased damage from ice moves.

How is Attribute relevant?

Which makes sense, even though the post is old, since we see bonus damage from advantageous elements but not attributes (no notifications for Vaccine 1.5x, etc.)
