The Torus situation is one of the most elementary, and reads like the start of a programming effort that was never finished.
It may sound inhumane of me to kill him just like that. But, in real life I wouldn't even recruit him. I'd cure him and send him back home to make love to his wife so she can stop talking to me like he's a goner.
Oh yeah, he can gimme that knowledge treatise he has stored up in his attic instead, as a reward for me saving his life. I always feel bad having to steal it.
I just fire him after healing and pretend he goes back to the farm. Its a shame the world reacts so little to things you do.
Most of the mercs you can hire usually have really low base stats, especially in the early stages of the game. So I'd say Torus is a welcome addition. Not to mention Carnivorous isn't exactly a hindrance since nearly every food we have our mercs munch on are Meaty in some way or some form.
I turned him into an Executioner. Here he is at level 9, cleaving through enemies like butter:

Not being any worse than any other recruit and cheaper to boot is actually an advantage in his favor. You don't need to min-max in this game. Gear, buffs and tactics matter more, in the end, than base stats. So if he's affordable and his negative trait is virtually negligible, why not pick him up? He will serve.
Any warm body can be turned into a killing machine, with proper shepherding.
