ah yes, that's what I was talking about :)
Just left click twice lol. Adding + costs 10 influence, adding ++ costs 40. Which is insanely cheap in all but the earliest game.
Honestly, I think it's way to cheap. It's too easy to design mercs to be exactly what I want them to be. It removes a lot of strategy and role playing compared to not having that option, it was just more interesting to have to pick the best out of a restricted choice.
At least, the cost of of career planning should be cumulative per character, across every level. So the first time it costs 10, the second 30, the third 60, the fourth 100, and so on. Adding ++ in one go would count as using it twice for cost increase purposes. That would actually bring some interesting choice into the game rather than having cookie-cutter units.
The thing is you don't have to use the career path if you don't want to or even get it as an option. Then just choose what ever stats the RNG gives you on level up.
Well sure. I could also never equip a weapon to make the game artificially harder.
What I find interesting in strategy is making the best of the tools and options at my disposable. In the current game, that includes an OP Career Path. Hamstringing myself by not using it and deliberately playing far below optimal just makes me feel like a fool. Maybe if I do ever start a 3rd playthrough from 0 I'll try to do that as a house rule.
But that's a far inferior solution to just balancing it properly by having the cost of using career path always ratchet up. It would also make for a nice Influence sink, because at the moment that's the only resource in the game that is essentially infinite as early as finishing the first region.
Movement points are to 12 + 6 from war ponies. 18 is usually enough.
