Direct combat it is then from my new Captain.
I did notice you can appoint a Pony as a Captain, or a Boar, tempting as I do have a combat pony XD
another one is your tank (or whoever moves first in battle). i usually place my tank towards the center of my group, do the captain ability to gain valor points, then charge him into the enemy and get aggro.
I made my ranger lieutenant because she is very often right next to another companion already engaged with an enemy and can use the lieutenant ability frequently.
i think you need to have a bigger party. maybe six or more people. or it may be related to your party's level (most of my peeps are lvl 4/5).
after awhile you'll get a popup saying that you can appoint a captain. it happened automatically to me.
I just felt it better for my style that my captain was more of a 1 v 1 character that was going to be armoured and in the middle of the fight and on the front line given the shout radius isn't that large. Went with my hard hitting hvy armored brture with shield as my captain. Then a sword and board as my first LT as he was a similar character and for the second LT I went for the highly mobile assassin ranger.
