They are buffs you get when you create/build your banner in the camp. You right click on the banner and can spend influence for some nice "until next rest" buffs. So you only activate them right after your party just rested. Some powerful stuff there.

The banner also should be used (manned) by someone. So one of your troops carries it.

I don't mind a game not hand holding you the whole time, but some things I can't be arsed with clicking everything to find out what's going on.
