Where do you get bait for fishing?

The second tier fishing hook requires bait to craft, where do you get some?

Rat nest for sure, you can also steal a couple from that old man's fishing shack in a barrel.

I found a few in a random chest in one of the cursed towns in Ludern. I was coming here to try and find a reliable source.

Things that didnt work:
Leave rotten corpse on impale spike
Ability from molerat
Ability from boar

I did see a stack on a wandering merchant which I didn't buy as I hadn't seen that recipe yet. Unfortunately all the merchants that wander around look the same so no idea how you might find that particular one again. I guess stop every merchant on the chance they might have some. Or maybe there is a recipe to make some I haven't seen yet.

Unfortunately the only consistent source I've found so far is Rat's Nests. They're a pain, but you can eventually gain the ability to re-spawn the nests with an alchemy recipe, although it's a bit of a demanding recipe. I've been through Tiltren, Arthes, and Vertruse, but have yet to find a better source. I'm currently exploring Ludern so if I come up with a solid source outside nests in the future, I'll be sure to add it here.

Ludern Rat nests respawn automatically without any need for recipe.

That's useful - I was under the impression it required the recipe from exploration to do so.
