Once you have a cooking pot for your camp, make sure you assign the cook profession to one of your team, and then assign that cook to the cooking pot(but dragging that character against the cooking pot, you'll see the icon above it change from 0/1 to 1/1 once they're successfully assigned) by doing that, you'll reduce the food consumption for your team each rest.
There are other bonuses available for assigning other characters to the different camp items. By keeping your ponies assigned to hitching post, their carry capacity is improved, having a companion assigned to work bench will provide a few raw materials after each rest, etc.
