Minimap disappeared

How to bring it back, there is no onscreen icon for it, nor a shortcut for it. Pressing M brings up the map that covers most of the screen

There is no minimap per se. One pops up when you accept missions to point you in the right direction, but other than that you have to use the full size version, which personally I find is far more useful
