Romances?
Are there romances in the game? I know there are between companions, but what about the main character?

There is no main character. You are never personally addressed, only your mercenary company as a whole. And all its members, even the starting ones, can be dropped at any point. In any case, there is an achievement for party members engaging in a romantic relationship but I'm not sure how that is triggered. I have several members at "Adored" status with each other, but have not seen any romantic interludes occur.

I once had my Hakert and Torus fall in love, and i also once had two girls hate each other. Didn't try for either status, but somehow I must have triggered it by what happened in combat and who was near whom in camp. There's an older thread here where i said I now understood why Torus didn't want to return to his wife... and i've seen at least 2 instances (not my own) where one of the companions falls in love with one of the horses.

They get the "Couple" Trait. It's a confession event you pretty much have to agree on or else get huge negative status (like saddened/regected or something for several days).

On our Co-Op game it happened between two of my friend's mercenaries (male + female).

The Couple trait has no effect right now but Devs have confirmed it will have some sort of bonus. More than likely the old 10% damage bonus when next to each other instead of the normal 5% from Best Friends. But who knows.

Also, I believe you can only have 1 couple in your game. Meaning, only 2 of your mercs will declare themselves a couple. So if you have 4 mercs, 2 can become a couple, the other 2 seem to never get the couple status. 6, 8, 20 and so on. Seems only 2 of them will ever be a couple. Probably to keep things balanced, who knows.

Helldiver is it something you read from the devs somewhere or just from your experience? because indeed after having 1 couple I'm trying to get more and 'stuck' at best friends for ages.

I currently have 4 couples on a 12(all lvl 10) person team. Just make sure the people you want to couple sleep, work and fight as close as possible. In combat work them together and always end their moves next to each other. I also keep the horses in a far corner to limit animal coupling.

I do all of those exactly but only managed to get 1 couple so far. OK thanks for clarifying the subject.

My post is from a much earlier version of the game. Things may have changed since then.

I think we should reconsider the fact that a human "dares to confess his love" to an animal. This dialogue in the game looks strangely like a human-to-human dialogue (pairing up)...

Relational behavior between team members (human and animal) seems too general.

Have a nice day, and enjoy the game !

The system pretty much doesn't care who or what the companions are, long as they get a +3 relationship they are getting paired unless neither can have post-rest events (i.e. if both are animals).

Ok, so why am I penalized for not wanting my officers to be a gay couple? Give up an stay friends is a -10 point happiness hit AND a -1 to the relationship - which may mean I have to deal with this choice again?
VipreRX Mar 31, 2024 @ 5:42pm
The -1 to relationship drops them back to 1 level below the one that triggers the prompt. The -10 to happiness is just fluff because "the characters are sad". It's gone by the next rest practically.
