"is it just real life medieval like Mount and Blade"- it's not set in the real world but in a fictional one based on medieval Europe. And the devs have chosen to keep the setting low fantasy (where supernatural elements are present but limited).
"Are there any playable female characters "- yes. In fact, this has led to some rather off-topic discussions.

Removing from wishlist now.
You need magic for it to be fun?
I can't answer for the OP, but in my case , yes. I have had quite a few no-magic medieval sim/rpg/trpg, and without magic it feels dull.
*facepalm*
Magic systems in most games involve the use of mana or spellcasting points to cast spells, and spell effects usually fall into a few categories such as burst damage, damage over time, status effects, etc.
Wartales already has some of these mechanics built into their physical combat system. Burning, poison, slowdown, knockback, burst damage (in the form of crit, especially from flanking), aoe damage (flaming bow). Some of these attacks aren't realistically possible or realistically insensible, such as a sword that sets you on fire. It even has valor points system, which is effectively spellcasting points.
Wartales is about strategy. Magic or not doesn't change its nature. Even if you want magic in a specific game, that game has to be about strategy not magic. Therefore, what you're criticizing about Wartales (lack of magic) is really niche compared to what is being offered to you, which is essentially the same thing but different graphics or animations.
One guy who wants magic in the game is going to want something different from you. You might want to fight a dragon; the other guy might want to ride unicorns instead. But considering the low-fantasy medieval setting in this game, your demand for magic is going to run against the desires of most other players here who don't want magic to ruin the setting of the game.
I recommend you play Skyrim and mod it however you see fit instead... But please don't discredit a game by calling it dull when you fail to categorize the game by what it actually represents rather than what it actually has to offer.
It's like you want Godzilla to make an appearance in a Game of Thrones TV show. I watch Godzilla and I watch Game of Thrones, I don't want to see them in the same show because they both embody different themes.
I get that, i kinda tick the same. Anyhoo, somehow this games manages to keep me playing for over 200 hours. ;) It has many ideas and some weird ones. (Guess you don't know, there is kinda a Rock-Band-Homage baked into it. ;)
So, it is you decision not to play it, but i think you are missing out on some great fun!
I love magic too and when I started back then I was wondering why there are not clerics, wizards and stuff, then looked closely and noticed that its a different setting with only low fantasy aspects.
However, it doesn't make the game less fun and to be honest this game is one of the best out there when it comes to what it offers (which is A LOT). Alone the freedom we have with our party, it's size, having animals, creepers among other things as companions in battle, having a decision system that affects parts of the story and world its a lot of fun.
I have over 320 hours of play and still going in co op and single.
It would be like a person saying "I need a potential partner to have male anatomy or I don't want to make love to them" and you saying "omg ur wrong and this is why...". There's no combination of words you can say that will change the preference, so attempting to makes you look ridiculous.
Unsubscribing.
No it is a question of taste. If I prefer strawberries to chocolate, it ain#t a question of short sightedness.
Just like a prefer, by a long way, TB to RT.
Like how in Lord Of The Rings there is all that supernatural (as in Wartales) but noone is throwing fireballs and lightning bolts 24/7.
Instead, when Gandalf makes a big orb of light, everyone is already going: "oooohhhh, look at that!".
Because it stands out. Because it is rare. Because it means something.
I think that kind of mysterious low-key magic would really fit well in Wartales.
