Newbie! Please, help me with trait decisions.
I'm going with the Apprentice group. Could you all help me so I don't gimp myself with my further selections?

------------------------------
* "Your Companions Bonus's" - I think I read going with less Fatigue was best?
* "If they had a flaw" - I have no idea what to choose here.
* Good "Positive Traits"?
* A safe "Negative Trait"?
-------------------------------

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer!

This guide is pretty good, with trait suggestions per class. Mostly I pick lazy as the negative trait. You can get rid of them eventually through 'drinking buddies' event.

1. I always go with less fatigue since it's one of the most annoying thing you will be dealing with.
2. I usually go for 10% risk chance while sleeping, you can counter later with a camp craft.
3. Depends on the class, I usually go for +5% to main stat traits and crit.
4. Drunkard for me, you can lose that negative trait by not drinking for 10 days in a row (but you will get MASSIVE negative opinion in return so be prepared for it)
1. Less Fatigue
2. -1 carry capacity
3. Strong/Nimble (+5% to Strength/Dex)
4. Stupid (-5% combat xp)

The stupid trait is fine, you level a bit slower so you end up with a bit better gear for your level. Having better gear and lower level is actually a buff not a debuff.

A tip for that, learn the Hemp Tea recipe as fast as possible and always use it on rests, plus pick whichever option increases happiness during rest events. Could end up being a very close shave with at least one companion threatening to leave, but you should be fine.

This and new recruites from the inn are usually a level below your party, so they'll slowly catch up. By the time they caught up to your original members you can remove stupid.
There's other upsides to it, but I wont get into detail, as they might be confusing for a new player.

Does that still hold true if I chose the second map option. The one where things don't level with me? Maps are locked?

Dropped gear from enemies is based on their (the enemy's) level. So in that sense no.

But imo it is still the negative trait with the least impact.
