Is there a way to customize characters?

You can change your hairstyle (and beard) and get a face tattoo.
There are helmets, armor, shields, belts, bags, weapons, ...

There's also a few mods if you're looking into more in depth but devs don't openly support it, which is quite sad though. It would help increase the game longevity.

Then you get what you find, but can change the hair style and color via an item. Not the most indepth character creation system but its fine.
