Wartales is more about creating and managing your own mercenary company. And I mean managing everything from- gear, resources, skills, money, food, morale, time, salaries, inventory, camp, etc. It's very immersive and in-depth, and extremely fun to play. You can run with 4 units, or 20, it's up to you, and you can customise the difficulty and other settings to suit yourself.
Just watch any gameplay video/walkthrough, and you should get an idea of the moment to moment gameplay. The base game is very worth the asking price, even more so on discount. You can easily squeeze out ~300 hours in a single playthrough. If you're planning on getting the DLC, the pirate one is good, others are not worth the price (haven't tried the new DLC). Either way, only get the DLC if it's discounted.
Wartales is about turn based combat embedded in a small but nice world. You manage a complete unique gang of mercenaries. My first time my gang was completely different skilled as my new gang. I choose the easiest management since I dont like too much micromanagement. On this level the experience is very rewarding: you still need to plan ahead about food and materials, but it's not bothering you too much. Money is not really stressing you, but it's scarce enough that it feels important. Each weapon or armor or helmet you find is special (for you), since they often have abilities that change the way of fighting drastically (for example a tank becomes a charger).
It has RPG elements that I find very rewarding, but it's not a real RPG with a grand story and important companions. The feeling is to manage a small group of friends where even going to the woods can be scary (in the beginning) and every victory is meaningful.
