I also mainly steal recipes.
The nice thing about stealing recipes (or components) is they will get used up. Though to be fair, it's easy enough to use the Camp Chest to launder items.
I agree with Silent.
In the early game, stealing lets you get free stuff (i.e. saves you Krowns). However, earning money isn't that hard in the game (especially with the Tavern DLC) so stealing quickly becomes:
1. A way to advance your progress along the Crime and Chaos path
2. Earn Thief profession XP
So I do stealing mainly for those reasons, not because I want to save on Krowns.
The easiest way to level up Thief is to stash that companion in the Tavern to steal from patrons.
Normally, Thief XP progression is slow because there are a fixed number of locks to open and you don't want to accumulate too much suspicion at a time so you only steal every now and then.
Tavern Thief XP tends to be quicker, from my experience.
- Get a stack of high value items
- Sell it to a vendor
- Steal it back with a thief high enough level to not be auto-caught at 100% suspicion gain
- Put it in your camp chest
- Have your thief launder it
- Turn yourself in to the guard and pay the fine to reduce your suspicion level to 0%
- Repeat
The fine is less than what you can sell the items for.
I usually keep all of the rubies I get and use them for this. A stack of 100 is like 7k profit whenever I need quick cash. Skill training books are also great for this and can be stolen from any Brotherhood Training Camp.
Early on, in Tiltren, you can buy cheap stolen items from the bandits in Lakeside Camp near Stromkapp. Launder these and sell them for a profit. They always stock trade goods which have a good resale value. Never sell items that haven't been laundered, as this will add to your fine and reduce their sales value. Also avoid crafting with items that haven't been laundered, as you will be fined for destruction of stolen property.
On lower difficulties, you can steal items, launder them, and then talk to a guard and blame a companion to remove suspicion. Afterwards go to the jail and just buy them back. If you do this too often they will permanently leave your group though. On higher difficulties they will be executed, so avoid doing this.
If you've gotten to Gosenberg in the Grinmeer Province, you can go to the church and in the basement you can rest in the bed there to rapidly remove suspicion.
At higher levels of Crime and Chaos you actually don't want to remove your suspicion though, as each wanted level adds 5% crit chance to your entire party. So at 500% suspicion you have +25% crit chance on your entire party. You can use your banner flag in the camp to spend 100 influence to make guards not chase you if you're worried about dodging guards.
There's also a common camp conversation that can occur while wanted that can reduce detection range while on the map, this can help a lot if you don't have access to other sources of detection reduction.
I understand the guard reinforcements, but how does having wanted level affect assassination missions?
Doesn't as far as I could tell.
ETA: Had a 4 star wanted level.
