Additionally, each class can use 2 of the 3 armor types (light, medium, & heavy). However, each class can only use one at a time, depending on their specialization (check out the upgrade tree). At level 1, you'll want to train a blacksmith and craft some rags until your mercs can use real armor.
So, once you've specialized each mercenary at level 2 or 3, they will be able to use 1 type of weapon and 1 type of armor. As you play, you will get/craft better armor & weapons, and these will have level requirements. Your mercs must meet the level requirement for gear in order to equip it (as well as being proficient from their class and specialization).
As a fellow fan of Battle Bros, I totally get where you're coming from. However, this game does it's own thing really well. Once you get into it, every class has great abilities, and you don't need a "front line" like you do in BB.
Good luck! Hope you enjoy the game. There's a lot of tactical goodness to explore.
Everything this poster said is right, but just to clarify this point, mercenaries can wear any armor class lower than their max.
So if you picked a specialization that can wear Medium armor, they can wear both Medium and Light armor. Heavy armor wearers can wear Heavy, Medium, and Light.
And classes that can only wear Light armor can only wear... well, you get it.
Thank you for the correction/clarification. It's been a long time since I started a new run & I forgot you can wear lighter armor. I'm going to claim I wasn't thinking clearly after fighting Skelmar all day XD
