Galvanise
Made the mistake of making my Ax man the captain, ax have 1st skill in battle bonus damage
The problem is galvanise counts as the first skill used, so they lose the damage bonus
My fault I didn't think about it when I made them captain but does anyone feel it should be 1st combat skill used for the damage bonus ?

Or if not that we should be able to change captains for a happiness penalty or gold cost
I can't just dismiss a level 9 now so I could change captains

I can respec ofc to a different bonus, but the points still stand

I got the same problem as you on my first run. I also think it should be "first damage skill". Maybe more people agree and we get a change :)

You can just pay the 500 gold to respec the merc at an academy.

Instead of the first skill damage bonus you may select one of the others.

(planning to to this right now since have the same exact problem)

Yep already respeced but i think it should be first damage dealing skill used still
and that we should be able to change who has a rank or not

It's very useful to have ovation and galvanise on the same unit, but that means losing a 2nd attack ability, which is a fair trade, but to lose the 150% 1st strike bonus too seems a bit much to me

But the main point is It should be the 1st damage dealing skill used to trigger the bonus
EG: if i have to use taunt as my first move that shouldn't cancel my 1st strike bonus

Oh, I agree it would be better if changed. I was just replying to your "Or if not..." part :-)

The fact that recklessness applies on first skill is the reason the level 8 skill that pulls all units around to melee range is not very useful, you'd think it would work perfectly in conjunction with a maelstrom and recklessness.
Recklessness is also why I make my captains the mace wielder. Give him high mov, with his heavy armor he can lock down an important enemy easily after galavanising 3 or 4 units for vp, then vp on engagement, built with cruelty and one on one, you can engage disengage to use all mace skills (taunt, weakening and basic) at vp positive, simple to get 4 or 5 vp with the mace and be engaged against a unit, second unit to move the axe, that uses the basic skill to engage, then ovation, giving riposte to the mace and inspiration to everyone else, or on a small team (4-5 units) keep rampage on the axe so either basic or rampage get's the effects of recklessness

That drag units into range is a niche thing, I don't take it often only time it really pays off big time is when you have two arrow barrages ready and drag a load of units which is pretty rare for that to happen
Started to optimised the team now , getting some 700 hits and 1500+ some units for all attacks in one turn

Btw range bonus from belt item ( idk bout armour) applies to galvanise
brings that extra unit or 2 into gal's range, had a 8 galvanise last battle, needs the larger team ofc and it was at rats nest but nice the bonus works

Took Fanaticism on the Axman, which gives Fury on every turn, for 50% plus on every first hit instead. Still a heavy hitter, but more consistent. Avoids these problems. But you have to upgrade it to get rid of that health malus. It's like a free Wrath.

If you mass poison enemies, Great Pig Iron axes will autocrit on basic attack. Together the bonuses make up for losing the huge 150% on Recklessness.

What is the upgraded affect of fanaticism?

Yep that sounds like a decent set up
I ended up re speccing and giving the capt brions ax and swapping splitter to torus who is level 11 so that's a better move anyway I suppose
The 150% bonus on splitter is basically 3 kills normally, albeit a delayed kill sometimes

FWIW - in my second run through i've made my best archer my Captain - makes it easier to maximize VP as my archers usually go last and i can arrange my melee mercs to maximize points - both my axe guys are LT's
