Its open-world coop but you cant move too far from each other, have to be on same screen range.
Coop is for 4 players max because at start there are only 4 characters. You can share characters but each player control they own, depends how you guys split characters between each other.
Anytime in camp, you can take control or give control to characters.
Every player has they own inventory but gold, influence and weight cap is shared across everyone.
Camp has shared chest where players can store value items or exchange items between each other.
When it comes to quests and dialogues, everyone can see and choose options but only one option is per company hence talk it out how you want to play.
Interactions in city you do as party so 1 location for all players at the same time.
Combat is turn based but within each turn there are free actions that you choose what character will move at time. All players can move without waiting for each other but for example: team move - enemy move - enemy move - team move = then if one player use team move, other players need to wait for next team move.
Game in itself is nice for coop but once you start playing with friend, you cant add more people to existing save.
Well the only way I seem able to join a coop session is to get an invite from the host to join a game which then launches the game. Since we all have a copy I can't be sure I do think everyone needs a copy to play though.
Why? Because loading saves doesn't work properly. After about three hours of gameplay, it was just a matter of luck whether a save was still loadable, until we got to a point where we couldn't load the save at all. At this point I can only strongly advise against Coop until they fix the problem.
Otherwise, the rest of the coop mechanics worked.
Did this issue ever get resolved? We haven't played WT yet, but my wife and I were debating playing it co-op until we saw this. Hopefully this is fixed as it's six months later, but with game companies nowadays who knows?!
