- Get an archer with slowing attack
- (Not tested yet) capture a capitain with inspiration and recruit her
Also some of the attacks can just be used to gain ground if you have nothing to attack.
You have described 99% of the combat scenarios in the game. I'm talking squad against squad. Champions and arenas (the 1% that sometimes makes you wonder) are slightly different.
Commander / archers (only if fire) -> then all enemies (because without a commander and an archer they are not dangerous).
Sounds like you're doing good, being a tad hard just makes it more fun imo.
after that they are pretty easy
Mac makes a good point as well, in this game Movement (and willpower to 12) are 2 seriously important things that you'd often skip over in similar games in favour of raw dps. You want your rangers around 14-15 movement and everyone else in your troop at 12 at least. Theres also a skill book you can find (or buy) that lets you upgrade a companions skills, Your First LT has a riposte skill that when upgraded gives all unengaged allies double movement for a turn. Pretty handy for sticky situations like the last enemy alive being an archer ;)
But if they are out of range they become boring, fortunately the AI is not too cunning and it often happens that they kill themselves by falling into some trap, poison, fire etc.
