Coup De Grace seems like garbage
When the enemies use it, they're a joke

When I get a 2h Hammer dude using it, it's awful. I want damage now, not some jank "damage later" which doesn't even do enough damage to reward its use.

Is there any reason for this other than a weird smokescreen strategy?

It is a situational weapon for sure.

Yeah it's crap. I love smacking them with a hammer, making them bleed, then poison them straight after. I hate the upgraded special attack though, that leaves you often poisoned yourself(pool of poison) - so I just don't get that skill upgrade.

Lucilla on the other hand is awesome. If you get it at Lvl 11, it's got the instant special attack for 1 VP. That does huge damage, and get's it's 1 VP back if you hit 2 or more. It's main attack is like Coup de Grace, but once you get used to it, it's great. I use my spearmen to manipulate enemies then 'capture them' in Spearwall. Place Lucilla behind that, and you're going to do enormous damage, like hundreds to each of those you captured. It's very satisfying.

Using it on the smasher subclass I view it as a more damage oriented support role. Roam from group to group dropping bleed and poison on groups of enemies for 30%+ hp damage per turn as well as destroying their armor, and set up other units that benefit from the bleed/poison such as assassin and great pig iron warriors.

The skill upgrade for the poison ability that leaves clouds is garbage though.

That's the Legion Hammer. Does Bleed on hitting armour. Different one to the Coup de Grace one IIRC. Legion Hammer is pretty useful generally.

level 8 upgraded hardore training, a sword and shield skill, let's you soak up dots for stacks of rage. This means those pools of poison are actually positional buffs for the sword and shield warriors. You just walk through a pool on your way to hitting an enemy and gain a stack of rage and no poison since you're immune to poison, bleed and burning. The 2 stacks of poison dropped on a 2 handed hammer user who kills an enemy or two with the swing equates to a 10% hp loss per turn. Unless you count on having your battles last 10 turns, this is completely irrelevant other than if you're fighting mosquitoes.
