Capturing Animals - Beast Mastery question
I just got my archer to 5 and learned beast mastery. I fought a handful of animals but it wasn't clear to me how to capture them, so I looked it up. Is this correct?

-You have to have rope in your inventory
-Start a fight with animals
-Do damage to the animal (this was vague "usually" below 50%)
-The animal has to be engaged with another character
-Approaching from BEHIND the animal with another character who has rope in their inventory, a new skill pops up to capture the animal
-If the capture skill works, the animal joins the party

If so, how am I supposed to intuit this in game? Is there a tutorial I missed? Especially with my archer, I never would have even accidentally done this and wasted the beast mastery trait.

it makes me wonder what other unintuitive things are available in the game.

You don't need any mastery to do this, you can do it right from the start of the game with any character. Your procedure is correct, I'll just repeat it.
With someone (ideally someone with higher armor) go into engage with the character you want to capture. Cut the HP below half (better to damage the enemy a little more, then there is a higher chance) and with the second character go after it and a new capture icon will appear. ATTENTION! ...the character that performs the capture cannot use the main attack first (if you have already done the main attack, the icon will not appear).

Don't need to be behind and it helps lowering it more than just to half. Bears are a joke to capture due to berserk giving you a 1hp avoid death mechanic.

Ok thanks looks like what I read was inaccurate. Is there some tutorial or text I missed in game that teaches you this?
There will definitely be something here in the guides section, I would primarily personally look for it on YouTube (some texts here may no longer be completely valid....however, not much has changed from EA either).
Anyway, be careful when capturing higher lvls (wolves and pigs in particular are completely useless, but basically you can say that about any animal). These teammates will increase the lvl of your enemies in this part of the game it can be annoying).

It's exactly the same procedure as capturing humans except you use ropes rather than chains. I'm pretty certain that there is a pop-up that explains this the first time you are in a position to use it. Worth noting that you need more ropes for bigger/badder critters like alpha wolves, dominant sows, bears, etc

Lol didn't even know you could capture humans either
You can buy Chains in any prison. Better to carry more pieces with you.

The capture itself can be seen in the video. The same goes for animals. (animals become companions immediately after capture)

I think the tutorial for capturing humans and animals pops up when you enter a prison for the first time.

While this is true, you are unable to give directions for the animal in battle if you've tamed it until you have a beast master, or the collar that lets you do the same.

A lot, far more than one might imagine.
I feel like there's an early quest in region locked tiltren that goes over it. Could be wrong
You will need ropes to capture animals, 5 ropes for bears. Chains which can be bought from prisons are needed to capture humans.

I found that it pops up when you actually have the option to do it (not in the prison). I think our issue was that we're playing multiplayer, and we keep everything in the shared camp chest, so the tutorial never popped up despite us fighting many beasts and humans because nobody had ropes or chains in their inventories. It was all in the shared camp.
