Newb friendly starting companions...?
Like the title says: which are the best companions to start with for a newb. I'm still trying to get a handle on this game.

guess it boils down with what you struggle?
in EA i was a great fan of the Farmers, because the option of 2 spearman and an archer out of the box was a great help. when enemys cant reach you ,because of spearwall, they cant hit you.
you get more food, the drawback is you need to make money faster for the first payment, or the missing startgold bites you.
in the actual game i prefer a group that starts with a swordman, because i want 3 later on and give them the jobs that give constituition as a bonus (the bonus is not world moveing, but this swordman are my tanks, so why not haveing a few hp more for them) . that makes them urgent to have early on. chef, bard and miner are not jobs i want to miss for long (ok to get a bard running you need the harp first from a second region, but than he is a great starthelp to keep your funds leveled)

in the end it is personal preference in team composition.

At the time of my last playthrough, I prefer farmers. 2 spearmen, an archer, and a savage.
1 spearman after level 2 - forest of peaks, healing
2 spearman - squad buff for rage, healing
3 archer - infantryman, long shot
4 savage - vanguard, but with a shield and a one-handed mace, rage.
Now the savage can receive AP from attacks on him. The first available spears push the enemy away - used to push under the cone of "forest of peaks" and "Archer infantryman". The savage tanks, and in case of danger makes "Vanguard" to break out of "Battle Connection".
In the further passage you can find in the game - 2 foresters, 2 warriors, 2 savages, a puglist (Belerion +2 levels above the squad) A little more difficult, after completing quests or a battle - another forester (Save from the Inquisition), a swordsman (almost completing Greenmir) a spearman in Belerion 2 levels above the squad.
If Adaptive research - fight only with animals and fight off bandits. Trade, trade, trade, and along the way save up resources. In roadside caches and corpses, store resources. Build Trading Posts. And only then begin military operations.
If Regional research - go through the first two regions, and then start demanding auto-battle from the developers (joke). I have not played Regional research.:steammocking:

I'm a new player too. Going into my first playthrough I chose the friends in search of adventure. I like it because it gave me a broad view of the tools to build my company, Brute, Fighter, Ranger, Archer. Each fills a basic role and they are a multitool to attack problems. I started with thief, smith, miner, and tinker to have a balance of gathering and production development. S far so good. I'm at 50% of the Althes content and the company has blossomed to a force of 14. Some are in reserve at our two tradeposts while others are trying their hands at mopping the deck in the tavern. As figured out what I liked best I gradually expanded, tried some new ideas from having had the learning experience and am trying out some of the other professions.
