BUT: In late game, it is super easy to have a small group of just Mercs (I use only 5 Mercs, but I could easy settle for less) with multiple master professions each, that you swap whenever you want. For example, 1 dude who is master miner and master woodcutter and master angler, who is my "farming" merc. You acquire backpack item that gives you hundreds of profession xp each rest. It's crazy. So once you get it, you don't worry about professions ever again.
I see. Yeah, in that case I'd rather just rotate professions on my mercenaries. It's a lot of micro-management - which I hate - but I'd hate it even more to have prisoners as party members.
What do your mercenaries have when they go into combat?
Edit: And you must be playing adaptive? ;)
I DONT like micromanaging my troops. So I don't bother optimizing. Most troops are just kept as Master Cooks. Reason: each reduces food consumption by 2. With other bonuses, my entire 5 man party with 2-3 ponies only consume 1 food each rest. Everybody subsists on just 1 dry meat each day. It's insane for simplifying my economy.
Wut?!!! So you are doing it with 5 dudes? The entire map? What are your mercenary subclasses and builds? ;)
2-Executioner, with skill that draws enemies closer. This gets many enemies in range of a 360 degree death spiral. He goes first, can usually kill 3 or 4 units in the first round. Severely thin the group.
3-Three Berserkers. All the same. Berserkers are the best and most versatile unit, period. Pugilist and Executioner are specialists, you only need 1 of each. Berserkers do everything well, they're great generalists.
Can Berserkers do decent enough single-target damage to replace Pugilist? I am still debating which one to take for my last spot of an 8-man group ;)
Berserker deals less damage in round 1, but the berserk class skill is not restricted bravery skill, it can be used each round, and every berserker in your group can use it. So 1 pugilist is ideal, but go crazy with Berserkers, have as many as you want.
Hmm, I can only have one or the other. I would prefer Berserkers, but I am afraid I won't be able to kill bosses quickly without Pugilists...
Berserker can kill 1-3 enemies any round.
I know, but my main concern is bosses. How do I kill them without a Pugilist? What are other major tactics?
So he can fill in for Pugilist even against bosses? What do are the major skills I need to take? Recklessness?
8) Challenging Shout (or Battle Cry)
10) Alacrity

Fantastic - thank you!
when there exists anything like that in your opinion, why bother with them?
